Research Areas
How to sense humans and understand their signals, from faces and gaze to the brain.
3D Computer Vision
We develop methods for acquiring and analysing 3D data of people: multi-camera depth calibration and 3D face reconstruction, landmark detection on 3D scans, and graph neural networks operating directly on 3D facial meshes, with applications to 3D facial morphometry and clinical assessment.
Affective Computing
We model and recognise affective states from faces, behaviour and physiological signals: emotion, stress, pain and fear. Our work spans probabilistic models of affect, multimodal fusion and foundation models, and the collection of multimodal datasets of spontaneous emotions.
Visual Attention
We study how people deploy their gaze, from stochastic and foraging models of visual attention to deep models that predict scanpaths and gaze dynamics in space and time. Gaze is also exploited as a marker of individual traits, for biometrics and for interaction.
Contactless Physiological Sensing
We estimate physiological signals such as pulse and respiration from ordinary RGB cameras, without contact. We develop remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) methods and open-source tools like pyVHR, benchmark existing approaches, and apply them to new problems such as deepfake detection.
Brain–Computer Interfaces
We work on the acquisition and analysis of brain signals, from affordable EEG hardware to neural network models for EEG-based monitoring and brain–computer interfaces, mental stress detection and brain disorder detection, as well as the modelling of neuroimaging data.
Human–Computer Interaction
We design interactive systems that sense and adapt to their users: virtual reality and video games that measure and modulate stress and fear, gaze-based interaction for people with motor disabilities, and the analysis of social interaction and wellbeing in older people.
